Some materials wear out; others settle in. These three have been used in homes for a long time, and they tend to get better with use.

Cedar

Cedar is light, holds its shape well and has a distinctive scent from the natural oils in the wood. Those oils help it resist rot and some insects, which is why it’s long been used for chests, closets and outdoor furniture. Over time the scent fades. Lightly sanding the surface brings it back.

Stoneware

Stoneware is clay fired at a high temperature, which makes it dense and hard-wearing. It holds heat well and keeps food warm on the table. Many pieces can go into the oven and dishwasher, but check the maker’s guidance, and avoid sudden temperature changes such as a cold dish into a hot oven.

Linen

Linen is woven from the fibres of the flax plant. It’s strong, absorbent and quick to dry, and it gets softer with every wash. It creases easily, which many people like as part of its look. Wash it warm rather than hot, and take it out while still slightly damp to make ironing easier, or skip the ironing altogether.
